1st Sunday of Lent

1st_Sunday_of_Lent.3RS..gif (419727 bytes) Science, Faith & Technology Sunday

In 1633 Galileo was taken to Rome to stand trial before the inquisition for heresy for stating that the earth moves around the sun and not the sun resolving around the earth.

The cross-placed on a downward angle represents the tension between the church and the scientific community. The sun is placed toward the center of the cross with the earth moving around it.

Symbolism: Taken from Ephesians 6:10-20

  • The iron urn represents the power and strength of God.

  • The Stargazer lilies represent humanity and the red centers represent Jesus blood shed on the cross for man.
  • The vines surrounding the lilies represent Christ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser” (John 15-1-5) providing protection when we put on the whole armor of God.
  • The ivy represents God’s faithfulness and eternal life.
